The implementation of the first phase of Vietnam’s largest airport, Long Thanh International Airport, is set to begin in August this year. Nguyen Tien Viet, deputy general director of the Corporación de Aeropuertos de Vietnam, reveló esto.

Tien Viet was speaking at a meeting with leaders of the southern Dong Nai Province. The key subject of the meeting was land acquisition and payment of compensation for the airport. The Dong Nai People’s Committee said that around 1,810 ha of land has already been cleared.

On the sidelines, Tien Viet revealed plans for the start of the exception of the project. He said that they are currently in the process of appointing the project’s contractor. This process began sometime back in Sep 2022. Its deadline was reportedly postponed a couple of times due to various challenges. Nevertheless, according to the deputy general director of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam, it is now expected to be concluded this month (Jul 2023).

Three consortiums are bidding for the implementation of the first phase of Long Thanh International Airport. The consortiums are CHEC-BCEG-Vietnam Contractors, Hoa Lu and Vietur, all of which are Vietnamese companies with foreign partners from Thailand, China and Turkey.

Overview of the 1st phase of the Long Thanh International Airport

This project phase is divided into three sub-phases (Phase 1A, 1B, and 1C). Phase 1A includes the construction of a four-storey, lotus flower-shaped terminal with a total floor area of 399,987 m2, and a single runway at a cost of approximately US $5.6bn. Upon completing this sub-phase, the Long Thanh International Airport shall have the capacity to handle 17 million passengers per year.

The Airport’s terminal shall be expanded and consequently, its capacity increased to 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo P/A in phase 1B. The latter shall also involve the construction of a second runway. In the last sub-phase (phase 1C) all facilities necessary for the operation of the airport shall be built. This will allow the airport to commence operations the same year.

The whole of the first phase is estimated to cost a whooping US$ 7.8bn to complete.
