An EPsCm contract has been awarded for a steam cracker intensification off-gas processing project in Slovakia. The engineering, procurement services, and construction management contract was awarded to Texas-based McDermott by the oil refining company Slovnaft.
This contract’s scope calls for installing a low-pressure recovery unit to upgrade the existing steam cracker unit. They will also improve ethylene production capacity by leveraging off-gas from current production. McDermott will make use of its strategic partnership with Lummus Technology, the licensor of the steam cracker unit.
This is in addition to providing comprehensive EPsCm services. Vaseem Khan, senior vice president of McDermott onshore, stated: “McDermott and Slovnaft have been partners since 2003. This recognition is a reflection of our prior success and Slovnaft’s faith in us.

The Slovnaft facility is believed to be one of the most modern refineries in Europe. The refinery produces basic plastics like polyethene and polypropylene in addition to handling oil and producing fuel. Furthermore, the petrochemical division benefits from its ethylene unit.
Deliveries for the project will come from McDermott‘s downstream engineering center in Brno, Czech Republic. In March 2022, the storage division of McDermott, CB&I was also selected to design and build two 500,00gal double-walled liquid hydrogen spheres for Plug Power’s green hydrogen manufacturing facility in Genesee County, New York.
